Thank you for the answer to my "serious opal cutting question". I left the stone as it is. I had the stone appraised by a graduate gemologist. She appraised the stone for $3000 wholesale and $7500 retail. She basically said it was "good" semiblack opal, one full grade above commercial.

One final question, is ebay a good place to sell opal if I unfortunately decide to sell the stone? What routes are good for selling items like this, and what percentage of wholesale can one expect to get?
