Re: Opals sturdy enough for engagement ring?

Dear Angela, My first thought would be no - opal can be worn in rings and can be durable, but an engagement ring is something that is worn constantly for years and years. Opal is not that hard (5-6 on the Mohs scale) and can scratch. It also can fracture, being as strong as glass. However, I'm sure there are many who will disagree with me. The setting style is important - inlayed opal is much more durable. For bigger stone good bezel all around the opal edge is required and a firm mounting can make a big difference.
