Subject: Royal Peacock - is trip good investment?

Hi all, i came across this message board and you all seem to know quite a bit about opals... i have a question about the peacock opal mine, and am thinking about going this year (2007) and maybe making some money off the opals i find. What is the profit potential for these opals? What are the chances of my finding quality opals? Would this be a good investment of my time and money going here for a weekend or so? and also, are the opals that you find here good quality? So basically i want to know if this trip would be a good investment. Thanks, and maybe i'll see you there!

Ryan, mining is a gamble. its probably one of the best gambles I have ever been involved in.
its a lot of fun & very interesting-whether you find something or not.do more research about the area before you come. Its a beautiful place to visit. The Royal Peacock is a great place to try your hand at opal digging. unless you want to travel to Australia

Dont know what happened t9o my post so I will try again.
Opal mining (any mining )Is a high risk gamble. If it was just a matter of finding a spot and picking up the opal and making money every one would be doing it. You only hear the success stories never the down side. Trusty me, I been mining for a lot of years. There are more people who have found nothing than have made enough to cover expenses. Just go for a good time and if you strike it lucky good for you. If you go with the idea of making a lot of money you will be disappointed.,

Also, remember, if you do find good opal, that you have to sell it. Virgin Valley opal, though often very beautiful, has a history of crazing when it drys out after it has been mined and does not have a ready market. The rule of thumb is that only 10% will not craze and can be cut for jewelry. That said, good specimens in water has value as collector's item. Still, you have to find a buyer, which can be problematic.

That said, years ago, on one of my trips to the Royal Peacock, I met a father and son team who were digging from Bend, Oregon who had a business selling jewelry set with triplets made from Virgin Valley opal. They were somewhat stablized and strengthed by the quartz top and black bottom.
