I am a fifth generation Arizona miner, and have experience in almost every aspect of mining, but have suddenly stubled into something new while mining gold in pink and purple rhyolite.
At fist glance, I thought these veins were chacedony, and started to throw them to the side, then the stoplight red fire hit my eye, and I about fell over backward! I picked it back up, and saw the bright green and cerulean blue fire. Now, I dont know the first thing about opal, but I heard some where that the stuff fades and crazez when it dries out.
Well, this stuff was blown out with dynamite two years ago, and has laid out in full sun through two record Arizona summers, and it still has all kinds of fire, and no crazing.Does this mean its gem grade? I thought dynamite messes opal up??!!
Well, anyway, the point is I need help identifying some of the minerals running with the opal. Some of the opal veins have large pockets with a hollow core like a geode, and these are full of bizzarre crystals that are basically clear, but have a slight brown- yellow tint. Some of the more clear-blue opal veins are covered with spectacular optical clear crystals, some of wich show fire, but are 6 sided like quartz! Does Quartz grow on opal?
Please help! I can send digital photos.
I aleady had the placer gold claim on this property, but am filing the opal lode just to be safe.
